On the day of her fifteenth birthday, the Little Mermaid is permitted to swim from her home in the underwater kingdom to the surface of the ocean. Her first glimpse of the world is for another birthday celebration: this one being held on a ship for a handsome prince. The Little Mermaid falls in love instantly—from a distance—but when a terrible storm sinks the ship, she acts to save the prince's life.
Thus begins Hans Christian Andersen's most famous fairy tales, wherein a young mermaid must decide just how badly she wants to be human, and what lengths she will go to be with the one she loves.
