After her father's death, Alexandra Bergson inherits the family farm in rural Nebraska. Consecutive crop failures are forcing many of the Swedish-American community to sell their farms at a loss and leave the prairie, but Alexandra remains unwilling to do the same. Against the backdrop of the slowly-flourishing farm, a relationship between Alexandra and her childhood friend comes into bloom.

O Pioneers! epitomizes the struggles of immigrant life in America at the turn of the 20th century. It is about building success in the face of hardship, and finding love in the heart of one's home.
