Seven years prior to the events of the book, Anne Elliot was engaged to wed Captain Frederick Wentworth. But at the behest of her family and friends, she broke off the engagement.

In the years that follow, Anne's family falls deeper and deeper into debt, until they are forced to look for alternative sources of income. They eventually agree to rent out their home to a British admiral—but the admiral's brother-in-law is none other than Captain Wentworth himself.

After years of not seeing each other, Anne and Wentworth begin their friendship anew. And if the awkwardness of it all can be overcome, perhaps Anne has a second chance at marriage?
