The story follows the life of Equality 7-2521, a brave and intelligent youth with a deep curiosity who dreams of becoming a scholar. Equality 7-2521 is a man who holds to his own mind in a collectivist society that demands blind obedience to the group. The single most important factor in understanding his character is his independence. He falls in love with a peasant girl named the Golden One as he attempts to conform to societal standards.
Struggling to break free from such a society promoting universal uniformity and suppressed individualism, he strives to attain the freedom to explore and think while continuing to pursue his scientific interests. Rand’s dystopian novella depicts an oppressive society that is devoid of any form of individualism and heavily reliant on collectivism.
