The story follows the life of Equality 7-2521, a brave and intelligent youth with a deep curiosity who dreams of becoming a scholar. Equality 7-2521 is a man who holds to his own mind in a collectivist society that demands blind obedience to the group. The single most important factor in understanding his character is his independence. He falls in love with a peasant girl named the Golden One as he attempts to conform to societal standards.

Struggling to break free from such a society promoting universal uniformity and suppressed individualism, he strives to attain the freedom to explore and think while continuing to pursue his scientific interests. Randโ€™s dystopian novella depicts an oppressive society that is devoid of any form of individualism and heavily reliant on collectivism.
